The drive was relatively easy, we stopped at a Walmart just before Rome for supplies and called the visitor center and made it to Lock and Dam RV park. Next day we headed for Rome and the visitor center where we were loaded down with stuff to see, and do.
Where do you start first? Well, we headed for the old town and lunch. Lunch was at the Harvest Moon recommended by a lady at the History Museum. It was good and we had fun. Then we walked the streets and took some photo's then we went to the library for the rest of the afternoon.
What an effort authenticating what info I have and finding my great, great grandfather. All I have is his name, John Williams. Might as well be John Doe. Worse, he married a Smith!!! After much searching we were able to prove he was here and his son Wm. Hickey was here and we even found a brother for Wm. named John who is two years younger than Wm. To keep them straight in my mind I call the brother John (Jr.) Problem is it was a long time ago and GA does not seem to have birth records plus John (Sr.) was maybe born in TN. ( .)(. ) ! So the hunt is still on.
Next day we drove to Enon Baptist church for info, it was founded in 1833, and they were said to attend church there, no luck, modern building and a minister who couldn't care less. We visited the Salmon cemetery very old, and found some Bailey's. My great grandmother is a Bailey and Married Wm. Hickey Williams. So we did the right thing and went home and had a beer.
This is me at the visitor center.
Beautiful downtown Rome.
Broad Street Rome is what an old town should look like.
Harvest Moon Cafe, a fun place with fun people working there.
They think Sherman destroyed their town, but it is very picturesque.
Nice town to explore.
Next day back to the hunt! Too exhausting to share now. More to follow.
See Ya! Barry and Shirley
