Wandering Around

They have changed the format on writing my blog so who knows if this still works. My favorite saying is the trouble with computers is they never do anything the same way twice. Maybe I should change that to the geeks can't leave it alone!

Yesterday we moved, the game plan was to go to another Corps CG near Nashville and use it as a "motel" to return and see a show and my uncle's plaque. Well, the Corps CG was full so we headed for Madison, a suburb of Nashville and stay there. We did and we are here. We are alone, the only campers here, and right on a railroad track. Honest to God, the trains go by every 15 minutes, I have timed them. Anyway we are only going to be here for one night, it's all we can stand.

The morning we left Floating Mill.

Me and Wayne.

Yep that's him.

We found the place.

The Madison Elks.

I defy you to find the damage to our $7,000 estimate to fix the trailer.
We drove the 8 miles to Nashville, visited my uncle's plaque, had dinner again at Dema's, did some shopping, fueled up and came home and read. This morning we are headed for Kentucky where hopefully we will R and R until our caravan starts.

More adventures to come.

Smithville, TN

Here we are, our visit to our friend in AL did not happen because of a prior commitment to her family. Undaunted we drove on to a Corps campground near Smithville, TN with the idea of seeing some new country. We drove up to one place and it did not open 'til the next day so we drove to another. We were tired and wanted to get stopped. As we approached a bridge under construction and ignoring the sign of only 10 feet clearance, we pushed on. Well, I side-swiped the side of the trailer. Wrecked our whole day.

The hole has been covered with duct tape to keep rain out.

The door hinge was scrapped too.

This will have to last 'til the end of May.
We are unhurt and the damage does not look that bad, it just effects our use of the awning until we can get it fixed at Jackson Center, OH after our KY caravan.

We are in a beautiful park and the people are very nice. We walk and nap and I think we needed this place. In Rome, GA we had trouble getting up early enough to see things, this morning we actually got up before 7 a.m. and allergies are not as bad here. All spring everything was covered with yellow pollen.

Nice place. The house way up on the hill belongs to Billy Ray Cyrus.

This is us.

Almost have the place to ourselves.

This house has pillars and is owned by Alan Jackson for all you country fans.

The place is hilly and we do get our exercise.
It has rained every day here, but it has been relatively cool and that has helped. Plans are to rest a few days then head back to Nashville and see the things we missed last time there and to miss solid objects, like bridges. Pulled this thing over 100,000 miles and this is my first accident that was my fault. Just can't drive down a tube with only 14 inches of clearance. Reminds me of an airline pilot on a flight check. Was asked the wingspan of the plane, he didn't know. Then asked how high the tail was, he didn't know. Finally the FAA inspector said he should know those things and the pilot replied, "they pay me to fly this thing, not drive it through a tunnel."

Camping in Rome

Our last day in Rome we visited the Oak Hill Planation, former home of Martha Berry who gave 65,000 acres of land for the world's largest campus. She was some rich lady.

You know who in the rose garden.

How do you like my new hair cut?

The sunken garden.

Mrs. Berry's home.

While in Rome we are parked in a beautiful place and I just had to share it with y'all.

The sign in front is kinda cute.

The view out our rear windows.

Peaceful.

Lookin good!

So far no alligators.

We are pretty high up, but they have had floods.

Lots of fishing.

We are in such a beautiful place here in Rome. I don't know what I expected but the area is beautiful. We love the town and the people too. Everyone is so friendly, the kids have no tattoos, are polite and respectful. Like when we were young. Like California used to be.

A very old observation platform.

Capt. America.
While we were here I do think we did a good job of looking for my ancestors. I need to go back to Arkansas and continue my search there. Later this year that may happen. We looked at records in the oldest two cemeteries here. East View and Myrtle Hill, we looked at all the old ones in the county and did not find anyone we knew. Sure saw a lot of folks we would have liked to know however.

Atop Myrtle Hill Cemetery. The city below. Remember Rome has seven hills, this one does too.

Nice view, no relatives.

Seems where ever you go there is an Airstream. We spotted this one from the cemetery.

There are Civil War graves in every cemetery.

I seem to have exceeded the length allowed for the blog. More later. Barry and Shirley
