February 17-19

After we left Ed and Susan's we drove to Schlulenburg, TX in the rain. About the time we arrived it just poured. The whole RV park was flooded, but we hooked up and just hunkered down for the evening.

The plan was to spend one night here and two nights at Livingston, TX at the next stop and get our rigs weighed, and look the place over. Harold and Sandy, however, had to continue the next day, because Harold had business in Chicago. Their plan was to leave Sandy in Tallahassee while he flew to Chicago.

Long story short, they left the next day hoping the weather would allow their trip. We decided to stay and wait for better weather because severe thunder storms were predicted along I-10 eastward. So Shirley did laundry, and I cleaned off more mud from the day before.

By afternoon, the worst weather was over and we walked to "Franks" and had brisket. At home in CA we have almost given up on eating beef. They have done something to it....it tastes plastic. On our trips it tastes wonderful in other states. They make pies there too and we returned in the evening for our share.

So we went to Livingston, TX with the idea of staying two days and getting weighed. Livingston is the headquarters of Escapees and has lots to offer folks, but was not for us. They have care facilities or those who are infirm, mail service, etc. etc.

Also their showers were the first I have seen telling you to deposit your "Depends" in the trash. Makes me want to add this to my essay on "Bathrooms I have known."

So we left after one day and headed for Baton Rouge, LA. What a drive! Traffic, accidents, you name it! Nightfall found us on the wrong freeway, headed the wrong way and it was getting dark. So we pulled in to a Cracker Barrel, not Crate and Barrel as I said before, had dinner and spent the night right next to the busy freeway. Busy, because of the three day weekend and today was the official day of Mardi Gras.

After a not too restful night we left and had a really pleasant day of travel we drove 330 miles, which is the longest drive we have had on this trip and arrived early enough in De Funiak Springs, FL to walk around and enjoy our evening.

Tomorrow we head for Pelham, GA to spend a few days with Mac and Mary who we met and enjoyed on our very first caravan in '07. Some great stories here.

We realize we have not taken many pictures along the way, but we have seen this area before. There was a highlight today however. Shirley was driving and we crossed the Pearl River in LA which is really a swamp and I saw a real live alligator! Want to fight a Civil War in that?

Ft. Stockton to Junction, TX

We drove to Junction, TX to visit some California friends, Ed and Susan. We had not seen them since a Rally in 2010. Ed, we learned got a foot infection and was in the hospital as we drove toward Junction. Well he got home the day after we arrived so all ended well.

None of you knew that I had had a sinus infection before we left and had some side-effects from the antibiotic I took for it. Well, ever the optimist I thought I would improve. I didn't. So while at Junction I finally got ahold of my doctor and got some meds for the problem. It is a whole story, drives to "town" because his phone could not reach us. Yes, I'm much better, thank you.

Anyway, it rained the night of the 16th and if I had not had 4 wheel drive we may have been stuck in the mud 'til summer. Actually Ed has a tractor and could have pulled us out.

We had some good rain all the way to Schulenburg, TX our next stop.

Las Cruces, NM to Ft. Stockton, TX

Feb. 14, Valentines Day. I remembered to get at card before we left home. Good thing too. My complaint when we went to bed was no coffee in the morning because there was no electricity here. For those of you who don't know, coffee is a big deal. Mornings, I just can't wake up without it. I wonder around with my cup in my hand, bumping into walls stumbling over things, and muttering to myself until I get enough coffee in my body to fully awake.

Well, unknown to me, Shirley had loaded up an old percolator coffee pot and there was coffee awaiting me with a card when I stumbled to the table. One year I had forgotten our anniversary so I was wary this time. Anyway this got the morning off to a good start. Also, a good thing, because it was to be a long driving day. Breakfast was at Crate and Barrel with not so good coffee.

Tonopah, AZ to Benson, AZ to Las Cruces, NM

On Feb. 11th we headed to Benson from Tonopah. As we drove we got a call from Harold and Sandy. They too were headed for Benson. Last year we were to be on the Civil War Caravan with them, but they could not make it. This year, we tried once again, but they had to be in New York and had left their trailer in Mesa,  AZ. As we drove along they had made it back and were to join us in Benson on Sunday night. Funny how these Airstreamers can connect. Anyway we were finally together.

Benson RV park is owned and run by Escapees (a RV club). This was our first exposure to them and we enjoyed ourselves. We had a cement pad and full hookups. We kinda needed a couple of days rest so we did nothing. We didn't even take pictures, we fueled up rested and walked around, sans camera. We went for a nighttime walk and our flashlight burned out, it can be really dark in the desert. But it was nice and next day we met with Harold and Sandy and continued our trip.

We drove the 227 miles to Las Cruces and stopped for the night at a road side rest stop. This is not just any rest stop but an award winning rest stop. I had learned on the net that it was safe and had beautiful views of Las Cruces. Ended up there were about 7 RV's and numerous trucks there for the night.

On our way to Tonopah, AZ

As we drive along we see such wonderful sights. We are glad we can at least share some of them with all you blog readers. Pictures are only taken when we stop, so you will just have to imagine what is seen while we are driving. The pictures below were taken at a rest break.

As we drove toward the RV park for the night, we used "Lucille" our GPS. She kept calling Tonopah, Tuna-pa.

Due to the time change, we seemed to not be aware of, we arrived after dark at Saddle Mountain RV Park. It was closed, but a man on a golf cart arrived and parked us. Then another guy came to collect the money. Everyone was nice, helpful and just seemed like they could not do enough for us.

The park is filled with snow birds and most people  were settled in 'til summer. We hated to leave, but we did.

Whew, he finally stopped.

Civil War Caravan Part 2

We are at it again. This year we plan to rendezvous at Ft. Sumpter, SC, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Our blog will cover the events until we finish this years caravan in Nashville, TN.

After this caravan we have some time off and the plan is to go to the top of GA and I can search for some of my ancestors. Then we start a caravan called Springtime in Kentucky. After that we head for home, hopefully visiting relatives on the way.

This year we started our travels with way too much food. We must have squirreled it away all winter, so finding a place for all of it in the trailer took a long while. Therefore we did not leave Lincoln 'til around 12:30. We are not known for early departures and this year was no exception.

First night was at the Visalia Elks, arrived at dark, paid our fees and had dinner there. Sat at the ER's table, had good conversation and over ate on spaghetti and HUGE meat balls. We had ice cream and home made cup cakes for dessert. So much for staying on a lean mean diet.

Next day we drove to Joshua Trees spent the night at an RV park in the desert next day we drove through Joshua Tree National Forest. We had never been here and it was a delight. Next year we may leave home earlier and spend some time here. Depends on the type of year, this year is perfect, not too much snow, rain or cold.

Arrived at Tonopah, AZ last night after dark and will head for Benson, AZ today where we will spend a day or two touring. I want to visit the Biosphere. Also this will give us a chance to breathe and slow down a bit. We seem to be in a hurry and there is no reason for that.

There seems to be a screw up with the GREAT photo's we took so hopefully that will be fixed next time.
